Ticks on dogs, cats & other pets
Dela
Ticks on dogs, cats & other pets are common during the warmer months of the year. They thrive in grass, bushes, wooded areas, and humid environments. Since ticks can spread diseases, it is important to check your pet regularly and use the right protection.

What are ticks?
Ticks are small blood-sucking parasites that attach to the skin of both humans and animals. They can be difficult to detect, especially in thick fur. Common areas where ticks attach include around the ears, neck, abdomen, armpits, and between the toes.
When are ticks active?
Ticks become active when the temperature rises above approximately 5 degrees Celsius. Therefore, they can be present from early spring to late autumn. The risk is usually greatest during spring, summer, and early autumn when animals spend more time outdoors.
Common risks with ticks
Ticks can carry infections such as Lyme disease and anaplasmosis. Not all ticks are dangerous, but it is still important to remove them quickly and monitor for symptoms such as fatigue, fever, stiffness, lameness, or decreased appetite.
How to protect your pet
1. Check their fur daily
Go through their fur after walks, especially if your pet has been in tall grass, forests, or bushes.
2. Use tick repellent
Tick collars, spot-on drops, and sprays can help prevent tick bites. Always choose products that are suitable for your pet's species, age, and weight.
3. Remove the tick immediately
Use a tick remover or tick-pulling tool. Pull straight out and try to remove the entire tick. Clean the area afterwards.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian if your pet becomes unusually tired, develops a fever, starts limping, loses its appetite, or appears to be in pain after a tick bite. It's better to check early than to wait too long.
